What to look for in table tennis shorts

Table tennis is played close to the table in a low, wide stance, with fast side steps and a lot of reaching across the body. That asks for three things from a short. The hem has to sit above the knee so it does not catch when you drop into the stance. The waistband has to be soft and elasticated, because a stiff waist digs in when you are bent forward for an hour. And the pockets have to lie flat against the hip so nothing snags on the table edge during a wide forehand. This pair does all three. The same cut carries straight over to badminton, where the lunge to the net asks for the same range at the hip, and to padel, squash and tennis, which want the same hem length. It works for pickleball, for cricket practice in the nets, and for ordinary gym training, which is where most of these get worn during the week.

Fabric and construction

Woven polyester shell rather than a knit, so the fabric holds its shape instead of clinging after a long session. Elasticated waistband. Side seam pockets on both hips. Plain hem with no cuff.
